For more than two decades, the ability of film makers to realize their artistic visions has been under assault by the electronics industry.
As streaming media has matured and production budgets have shrunk, inferior technologies have been sold to Hollywood as “just as good” as film – or “good enough”; they are not. There are clear metrics by which film quality can be assessed, but since no affordable digital alternative to date has been able to meet these standards, the bar has been slowly lowered.
Similar to the dark days of professional audio where MP3 was crowned as the successor to vinyl, most of today's productions largely ignore DCI-compliancy to embrace the lower-cost OLED/LCD alternative. This has led to inconsistent, mediocre content quality that often falls short of the artists' original intent by the time it gets to the consumer. How do we fix this?
